Autumn Term 2024
Our Maya Afternoon
We had a fantastic afternoon led by Julie from Lancashire History Services all about the Maya people. We thoroughly enjoyed the hands on practical approach which embedded our prior knowledge and taught us lots of new information such as how chocolate was first made using cocoa beans, the importance of societal structures and how Egyptian pyramids compare to Maya pyramids.
Classification
We made clay models of invertebrates through careful observations of their features before creating detailed models of them which we then annotated.
Making Advent Wreaths
During our RE topic all about the Christian season of Advent, we learnt all about the symbolism and significance behind the candles and greenery. The candles: The Prophets, John the Baptist, Mary and the congregation. The greenery ( which is usually evergreen): the hope of eternal life brought by Jesus Christ.
Class worship
Our class led worship on the theme of our current Christian Value: compassion. Within this theme, we answered the question, 'How is God compassionate?' The Bible story ' The Lost Sheep' was used to explore this questions by using puppets and actions to explain how much God cares for us all.
We enjoyed ourselves and the feedback was very positive from the other children who joined in very enthusiastically.
Our Rainforest Experience
In order to bring our rainforest topic alive, as well as immerse ourselves more fully in our English text ' The Explorer'., Class 4 took to the outdoor woodland area to learn all about survival in the rainforest. After discussions about leeches as well as mosquitoes, the children erected their hammocks in groups between the trees, ensuring that the rain cover fully covered their hammock and sleeping equipment. We then completed challenges to decide whether we should take shampoo or what alternatives we could take in order to prevent polluting the rivers, where we would dig the long drop, how we would prevent scorpions hiding in our shoes and finally, how we'd secure a good source of fresh drinking water. We finished our session with a fire when we also enjoyed some well -deserved marshmallows.
Beacon Fell Geography & Science Day
We had a very busy day at Beacon Fell in the glorious sunshine. In the morning, we carried out some map skills through orienteering, sketching a map to the summit as well as drawing features ( such as the play park) that we thought would encourage people to come to Beacon Fell. In order to find the answer to our geographical line of enquiry, why do people come to Beacon Fell?, we carried out a survey of the visitors that were near to the Visitors' Centre. In the afternoon, we carried out some science activities which involved classification, identification of invertebrates that we found and created pictures of these using the woodland's resources.
Imagining the life of a sofer ( Jewish scribe)
We used ink, paper and our home-made quills in order to copy a small section of the Torah onto our piece of paper. It was required a lot of patience and care which we found hard; although, we did manage to produce some lovely writing.
