Curriculum Topic Booklet - Spring Term 2026

Castles, Magic and Mystery

This term we will be learning about castles and our classroom will have its own medieval castle and castle investigation and writing area. The children will also be able to design and build castles in the small world and construction area. Our English work will include reading & writing based on fantasy and mystery with many stories based on dragons. Our classroom will also have a fantasy writing area with opportunities for children to write their own stories.

Our topic will include work in history, geography, design technology, art and music and we will also be going on a topic linked trip.

Children will be exploring and researching to answer key questions:

Who built the first castles and why?

Why were castles built on hills? Were all castles built on hills?

What was a motte and bailey castle? How did castles change and why?

What are the main features of a medieval castle and what were they for?

Who lived and worked in castles?

What did they eat and where did they get their food from?

Keep an eye on our class webpage to see photographs of our work and trips.

Curriculum Topic Booklet - Autumn Term

        Autumn Term

  Our Frozen World

During our topic on ‘Our Frozen World’ we will continue to build our locational knowledge through our work on continents and oceans and the geography skills of understanding human and physical features. We will also take time to look at environmental issues such as global warming and pollution.

Have you ever wondered what is at the top of the highest peaks and at the bottom of the deepest oceans? What is on the other side of the world or at the north and south poles?

We will continue to be historians researching the expeditions of Captain Robert Falcon Scott to the Antarctic, with all its highs and lows, and ask questions about the sources that could have been used to document his remarkable journey to the South Pole. We will answer questions such as:

Who on earth is this famous person? How did Scott get to the South Pole and what happened then? Why did Scott risk his life going to the South Pole? How do we know what happened on Scott’s last journey? How should Scott be remembered today? Did anyone else travel to the South Pole?

It’s going to be a busy and fun autumn term in class!
